Radio 270 Tribute Pages - News, Views & Feedback
Whilst not exactly telling us anything we probably didn't already know, BBC Radio York have come up with a nice little nostalgia trip here. It's refreshing to know that there are at least a few BBC journalists that are prepared to acknowledge, from time to time, that if it wasn't for stations like Radio 270, they probably wouldn't have a radio station of their own to play with today.
Reading through the material, I got the distinct feeling I'd read all this somewhere before, but couldn't quite remember where . . .
Radio York wheeled out Mike Hayes, along with Guy Hamilton for yet another trip down memory lane. Nice to know there's still something you can rely on.
The people at Radio York have obviously spent a little while copying and pasting from several established websites, (including this one), and have graciously including links to where they've been.
I'm sorry if I sound a little cynical, I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies after nigh-on 40 years. Anyway, it's worth a look. So Click on the copy & pasted banner to take a peek.
Did you see the programme " Inside Out " which was screened on
BBC-1 TV in the Yorkshire & Lincolnshire area ?

However, I do have one critisism:
Why Jimmy Saville ?Without wishing to take anything away from Sir Jim, I fail to see what relevance HE brought to the programme.
![]() | His first job at 14 was a coalface worker, then a scrap metal seller. He used to all-in wrestle two nights a week. His first taste of the 'pop' industry was as an assistant manager for Leeds Locarno. He later shot to fame on Radio Luxembourg in the 1960's. In 1964, he presented the first BBC 'Top of the Pops' music programme on television. However, Jimmy was not even one of the original team of D.J.'s on Radio One, starting instead nine months later. Here, he hosted 'Saville's Travels', a 'youth' chat show where he travelled up and down the country with a tape recorder. By the mid 70's he was fronting the popular "Jim'll Fix It" show on BBC1. He also featured in Yorkshire Televisions' hospital "fly-on-the-wall " series " Jimmy's ". A popular personality with one of the highest profiles ever, he has raised millions for charity. He held a record for running up the BT tower in London, and is well known for running and walking marathons across the UK in aid of many good causes. He is famous for his outlandish clothes, Rolls Royce, cigar, jewellery, and a welter of catch-phrases. |
But, while Jimmy Saville may be known to millions, as far as I am aware, he has never had any direct involvement with offshore radio.
Least of all Radio 270.
What was wrong with inviting someone like Paul Burnette, or any of the other former 270 men. I am sure many of whom would have been only too happy to provide the links.
Well, what do YOU think ?

Hi, and thanks for dropping in . . .
You will have perhaps noticed that I have removed all references to My Own Email.Com, the reason for this is simple:
There is an old saying; " There's no such thing as a free meal ticket " . Well on the face of it, My Own Email offers users the choice of a personalised Email address, with web-based access, so you can pick and choose the Email you want. And in theory none of the junk lands on your computer through Outlook or whatever. BUT what they don't tell you is just how much CRAP you WILL receive, as a direct result of their activities, passing your real Email address on to their " associates & affiliates " . So, far from cutting down on the junk mail, the Davesden address actually got more than ever! So, beware of geeks bearing giffs, as they say.
So what to do for best, I wondered . . .
Please note that, although it may take a little time, I will continue to reply to all E-mail that I receive here at the den, and you can be assured that every effort is being made
to ensure I don't pass anything on to you, dear reader.
Sorry for any inconvenience, but as you probably know, it aint much fun having to re-install everything up to 4 times in one week!
Hardly a week goes by without I get an E-mail asking if I sell or exchange Radio 270 recordings or memorabalia.
The simple answer is no, unfortunately.
Once again I'd like to say thanks to all those who have taken the trouble to write to me. Your E-mails are of great interest, and are what makes it all seem worthwhile. When I first started this site six or seven years ago, I had no idea what to expect. Well, the steady flow of E-mails that I get from listeners, and people who work in radio, shows me that I needn't have worried. There is still a lot of people out there who DO remember, and it gives me great pleasure to quote from a few of them on this page. So, please keep those E-mails coming, with your memories concerning the station, or reactions to the Radio 270 tribute pages.
Thanks once again -
David
What little stuff I do have is all available to download from the website, for free.

Disclaimer:
You mention you get many request for 270 recorded material but cannot supply it,well I have many 270 recordings and am willing to pass them on to anyone who wants it.

Hello
Stumbled on the Radio 270 site, its brought up a lot of memories for me I live in South Yorkshire, and always were tuned in to 270 in those days
as I was just getting an interest in pop music, I still do , and I even collect archive recordings especially of offshore radio, etc and radio jingles.
The reason for this e-mail is that I understand Paul Burnett has left Classic Gold Digital, so I have made no contact there, anyway I heard
and read somewhere that Paul is making a film based on the Radio 270 station, do you happen to have any info on this or know of any web site
to this film being made?
Appreciate any info please, also I enjoy the site and its detail, I have it marked as a favourite.. Thanks
Gerry

Hello.
You are right Paul would be the smarter choice not Jimmy Saville,I heard Paul was involved with a film of his offshore radio days, miss hearing him on the radio since Classic Gold dropped him!
They are short on sense by doing that and now they are dropping the local drive time presenter on our amber station and he is mustard.
Is there a website or agent contact for Paul Burnett please ?
I would be most grateful !
Sam.
Hi Sam
Glad someone agrees with me about Paul Burnett.
I really don't know why they chose Jimmy Saville to appear on a programme like that.
To my knowledge he never did anything to further the cause of free radio.
Commercial radio nowadays has lost it's local identity, they all sound the same wherever you are in the country. (Probably because most are owned by the same company).
So personalities like Paul are a dying breed on todays stations. But I'm sure he'll crop up again on the radio somewhere before long though.
Sorry but, the only Email address I had for Paul was via Classic Gold. So unless he contacts me again, I don't know what to suggest.

Hello there,
I listened to 270 at night only, because we lived in London. But in 1972 I ran into a guy when I worked at a background music company, who claimed to have been a jock on 270. His name escapes me, but he lived in Maidenhead, and actually owned his own Spotmaster. He also claimed to have worked on Caroline North and looked like the guy with sunglasses in your unidentified section. I worked on KHBJ in Texas amongst other things, but that as they say, is another story.

Being a " new " pc expert I just typed in "radio 270" and came up with
you. I've known Paul Rustling all my life it seems ( and probably longer ) -
his attic window sported the biggest radio aerial I'd ever seen. I met and (
hopefully became friends with Maurice Jeffries - know as Jeff Jeffries to us
)and other 270 types. I became a DJ at Pauls hull basied CRSC ( commercial
Radio Supporters Club ) formed just as 270 closed. We operated out of 3
venues in Hull "Music Box", " Penny Farthing" and "Gondola Club" where in
fact I continued to DJ after CRSC had folded. The nights were heady, packed,
and fun . Most of us where just turned 16 so only coke I,m afraid. I still
run a mobile disco company call Blacklight International ( 30 years on) and
only because I loved 270. My favorite DJ being Neddy Noel Miller - I liked
his "sung" theme song, honks etc - anyone else remember him. I was of course
a 270 Set member ( must look to see if my stuff has survived ). I've worked
with quite a few of the DJ's "after the event usually, as a support "driver
DJ" and remember talking to Paul Burnett at the Hornsea floral Hall above 270
when he was on Radio 1. I saw the ship in Whitby and still miss those magical
days.

Iwas an apprentice electronics engineer at a Company called Tunstall Byers Electronics of Askern nr Doncaster. We built all the DJ'S Consoles at our works and then took them out and installed them on 270. Happy memories. We even did the monitoring of signals back to work while it was being commissioned.

Hi
Just had to send a quick email to say how well done your website about 270 was.
My sister sent a copy of the recent BBC programme to me (now living in Devon!), a few days

Dave,
Thanks for constructing an excellent tribute site to one of the most popular offshore stations.
I have many memories of all the offshore stations, and my favourite was 270. It was good to see Mike Hayes has reappeared. I always enjoyed Mikes shows and always thought it a great shame that he never reappeared on any other stations. It may be 34 years but both his theme tune and that dam jingle he used to play every morning are still clear in my mind (the power of Radio!!!)
The last time I saw the Oceaan VII was in the ship yard at Whitby, we couldn't resist jumping onto the deck and although it was sad, at least we had been aboard the North's claim to Radio fame.

Hi Dave,
Its a great job you're doing keeping the memories alive but I must pick up on one point, in your opening pages you are advertising Bob Preedy's book, Radio 270 Life on the oceaan waves' your mistake is in the spelling of ocean. The point of having "Oceaan" in the title must be that it was part of the ships name "Oceaan 7".
Sorry about that. Now on to more important things I have a reel to reel tape of "The last hour of 270" and I was wondering if you knew where I could get it transferred onto cassette as I now have no way to play it or can you buy it on cassette.
If it is of any interest to you I, with my brother, went to Bridlington on that terrible August night in 1967 and were two of those "distraught fans and well wishers" mentioned in the book, Have you come across many more?
Keep up the good work,

Having read Bob Preedy's book about Radio 270 I thought I would visit some of the 60's Free Radio websites. I had an involvement with Radio Essex another pirate of the time, after Essex was prosecuted for broadcasting from within British territorial waters, several staff joined Radio 270. I never quite realised just how small the 'Oceaan 7' was.

Hi Dave, I've just been enjoying your 270 website...it certainly brought back some memories...not all of them great! I was plagued by sea sickness and the North sea is not the friendliest of places.... I've been in touch with Mike Hayes and am pleased to report he is alive and well, dividing his time between Holland and France and has just done his first solo (flying). We first met in Aden during our RAF days and did a Saturday night satire radio show back in '63. Nobody was more surprised than I when he turned up on 270 three years later! The reason for this email is that I thought your contributers might be interested in a forthcoming film based on my experiences on the ship. All being well, filming should commence sometime in mid September. I'll let you know more as and when.... I guested on BBC Radio Leeds last Sunday with Bob Preedy, talking about those heady days of '66/67 ... I look forward to reading his book. Paul Burnett |

Hi Dave and Happy Easter,
Like everyone else writing to you I was also a great fan of 270. I seem to remember that I was a member of the 270 Club and, somewhere in my Mum's cupboards, still have the membership magazine plus stickers and badges I was sent. I was also sent a record called 'Gotta Find A Reason' by some very obscure 'group'. I think all members were sent something via a draw on a Sunday afternoon.
Because of the likes of Paul Burnett/ Neddy Noel et al I took up a career in broadcasting...sadly long after 270 had closed.
Keep up the good work

My name is Brad and I am extremely interested in Offshore Radio - sadly having been born in 1970 means that I have missed out on most of the good stuff.
Sites like yours can help us to try to imagine the fun and occasional scary incidents that these brave pilgrims had to endure. Needless to say, I thought your site was ace. I have a friend who loved RNI during the seventies and I have directed him here too.
Interestingly, I live in Goole, so would have been in a superb location to appreciate Radio 270, and my Uncle (after extensive questioning) recalled 270 in its heyday - particularly since apparently the reception of Caroline and London round here was crap.
Keep up the ace work. I have been following the 270 and RNI stories on your site, any plans to add further histories?

FREE COMMERCIAL RADIO FOREVER - IT WILL NEVER DIE IN OUR MEMORIES
One of the saddest days of my life was in August 1967 when Radio 270 and Radio Scotland closed down Being only 12 at the time I listened to 270 on those long summer nights of 66 and 67 the likes of which will never ever be heard again on my first ever tranny which I have kept as a souvenier. With regards to the query from the other Bob about former 270 presenter Mike Barron I think I may be able to help a little.
I do not know the full details, but after coming ashore from Radio 270,Mike worked for a couple of years or so for BBC Radio Leeds then helped set up and run the hospital broadcasting service which I now work at,Radio Allerton at Chapel Allerton Hospital in Leeds. I believe that during this time Mike also did some scriptwriting for Yorkshire Television and also did various pieces of freelance work. I cannot bring you fully up to date on his activities or whereabouts as I last saw Mike in 1987,and I have not seen or heard from him since.
I hope that this is of use to your reader.

Thanks for the Email, and I understand your point about the 270 website, at least it is a lasting legacy to the people who made it all possible, and is a tribute to yourself.
I am currently doing some research on the 270 jocks, and have been it touch with many of them, but I wondered if you could possibly supply me with some biographical facts and figures about Mike Barron, I know he joined 270 from Radio England, and worked on Radio Essex at one time, apart from that I know not a lot, any info would be welcome.
And the biggest mystery of all, where is Rusty Allen ???? I know Mary Payne of the Big L site seems to know where he is but has told me to let sleeping dogs lie, It appears he has never wanted to speak about his pirate days and I understand never worked in radio since 270, a big pity as he was so talented.

Dear David,
I have recently discovered your web site about Radio 270. It brought the memories flooding back. When my mother used to go out shopping on a Saturday morning I used to listen to it on our old valve radio. Keep up the good work.
Cheers, Steve Andrews.
Congrats on a super site for radio 270 memories.
Back in the 60s I was a schoolboy living in London, so the southern based
stations captured our ears, but having been involved through a friend of a
friend with an off-shore station, I was destined to be a ship-bound dj, but my
age and the marine and broadcasting offences bill soon put a stop to those
plans, so I set up a company instead and have never looked back.
Being into radio, however, I can say that I have heard every pirate stion
there was in the 60s. I even heard the Radio 270 closedown on August 15th
(interchanging stations with Johnnie Walker on radio caroline South). To do
this I had to sit in a car on top of a hill in Scotland (on holiday) to
capture it all.
Well done on your web site. Good as it is, Id rather say goodbye to the
internet and bring back the proper free radio stations!
I had an Email from former Radio 270 dj Bob Snyder, who left the UK to host the breakfast show at CJDC Radio over in Canada, Bob saw the tribute page recently and took time out to write. Thanks Bob, lovely to hear from you.

I read the 270 Tribute Page on the web with interest. Brought back many memories. 270 was my first radio job. Launching a 30 year career. I remember one storm where we went off the air and took the ship closer to shore. When the storm subsided at about 1am they started back out to the 3 mile limit. After several hours, somebody asked Capt Hodgson what was taking so long. He said to be patient---he was still aiming for the light on a bouy off Flamborough Head. Somebody had to tell him the "light" was actually a light on the bow of the ship. The guy had been following the light for some time.
It's a miracle any of us survived!
Thanks for the 270 Tribute Page.

I also heard from Dr.Martin van der Ven, over in Germany, who included a link to this site in the Media Network article he compiled for Radio Netherlands International recently. Thanks very much, Martin, and thanks for the kind words and the link on your excellent site.

Lived in Hull in the 60's and listened to 270 all the time.
I'd forgotten the logo - I had a sticker on my bike !
I was listening on that dreadful August night as they signed off.

Hi David!
I came accross your great Radio 270 tribute page today. What memories it brings flooding back. Radio 270 became "my" station right through to that fateful day in August 1967.
It would be great to see a Radio 270 club on the internet, for listeners, ex-dj's, etc. Perhaps you could link up with any ex-dj's who have their own homepages, too.
I've had a wonderfull time visiting your site. Hull suddenly doesn't seem to be quite so far away, as it once did...

Radio 270 was one of the few pirate stations we could listen to on the east coast of Scotland ! I was never that enthusiastic about Radio Scotland, and the Caroline (north and south) signals were weak, even at night. Those few occasions when Radio London faded in through the crackle were amazingly exciting to a 13 year old! After the ban, I became a Veronica listener, rigging up a primitive but suprisingly effective antenna outside my bedroom window.
Hey, don't knock nostalgia !

Hi David!
Thanks for your recent reply, and for the useful set of links you sent. The radio caroline official site was new to me, so special thanks for that one.....
I don't remember listening much during winter 1966/67, or at nights for some reason ! (Didn't Garner Ted Armstrong, the American radio evangelist come on for an hour or so every evening ? Maybe that's why I switched off at night!).....

My memories of Radio 270 are of listening to it on a " tranny " , out of doors either in our garden.... on long summer days, or we were at the beach at Hornsea during our weeks family holidays there during August 1966 and 1967.
(We could see it moored in Bridlington Bay, one of those years, I recall).
Keep up the good work with the 270 Tribute page.....
Sincerely,

Thanks David, and just for you - Here he is, the one and only Garner Ted, still alive and well, and still spreading the word . . .
